Bible Study podcasts…

Bible Study podcasts…

I mentioned in my post the other day that I love listening to Bible Study podcasts during my half-hour-one-way commute each day…it just seems like a better use of my drive time than listening to sports radio banter, especially given how many of our sports “heroes” seem to have fewer and fewer reasons to carry such a title.

If you do an iTunes Store search for “Bible study” podcasts, you’ll find 185+ results.  The key here, of course, is to find a podcast created by a source that is:

  1. A person with Biblically-sound theology.  Might seem silly, but there are “Bible studies” out there that are not grounded in the Bible.  Search iTunes, and you’ll see what I mean. Take the time to read about the podcaster’s faith background to be sure it’s in line with yours, and due your due diligence online to be sure that you’re listening to a reputable teacher.
  2. Easy to listen to. Some of these studies will take a tremendous time commitment from you to get through. Listening to it should not make you want to gouge out your eyes to stay awake. If you start listening to a podcast, but the speaker is virtually “unlistenable” (these are technical terms here), feel no guilt about deleting the podcast and continue on with your searching…
  3. Someone you can contact. Should you have any questions, or need to clarify a point made during the study, it’s wonderful to be able to shoot an email to the person who created the podcast and ask them a question.
  4. Teaches on a specific topic or book. If there’s a certain book or topic in the Bible you’ve always wanted to learn more about, start there…I’ve always been intrigued by the Book of Revelation, and could spend days listening to the Book itself, let alone others teaching on it. But I just discovered a weekly “Men’s Morning Bible Study” on iTunes  that I’m going to need to add to my listening repertoire…in fact, a “Men’s Bible study” search yielded 8 results.  Hmmmmm.

Get started with podcasts!

Now, as far as subscribing to podcasts and using iTunes to do so, there are plenty of places out there already that will teach you this.  Here’s a couple:

  1. About.com has a basic write-up for beginners looking to start listening to podcasts.
  2. ZDnet has the below video to show you how you can set up your MP3 player to automatically download podcasts…like TiVo, only better…

3.  If you haven’t discovered the awesomeness of HowStuffWorks.com yet, let this little nugget      on how to CREATE a podcast serve as the appetizer for your creative outlet.
